Christian Women's Connection Luncheon March 10
Featuring Bob and Mary Borlee of Green Bay
The Dickinson Area Christian Women's Connection will host their monthly luncheon Wednesday, March 10, at Pine Grove Country Club, 1520 W. Hughitt, from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Our speaker this month is Mary Borlee from Green Bay, Wisconsin. Mary is a Vice President at Baylake Bank in Green Bay and has been a speaker for the Christian Women's Connection for 23 years. She has found that life does not always go according to our plan, but God is always faithful. Mary will be sharing how she experienced the peace of God in the midst of life's sudden storms that included the death of a loved one, and hearing the cancer diagnosis twice in three years.
Mary's husband, Bob, will be providing the music for us. Bob is a former professional musician who traveled throughout the country with various bands. He also sang at the Grand Ole Opry. Bob owns his own painting business and loves to sing, play drums and raise animals.
The menu will feature Poor Man's Lobster, baked potato, asparagus, salad, rolls, coffee, milk, and pistachio torte for dessert.
All are welcome and invited to attend. Cost of the luncheon is $13 inclusive with free nursery available upon reservation. Please provide children's names and ages.

Christian Women's Connection Luncheon February 10
Featuring Kim Schuster and “Lydia”
The Dickinson Area Christian Women's Connection will host their monthly luncheon Wednesday, February 10, at Pine Grove Country Club, 1520 W. Hughitt, from noon to 1:30 p.m.
We are happy to welcome Kim Schuster from Niagara, Wisconsin as our program speaker this month. Kim grew up spending a great deal of time outdoors with her family doing activities such as hiking, camping, and backpacking. Studying and collecting plants and using them to make teas, cough syrups, salves, chewing gum, etc., was a big part of her childhood. This love of nature was passed down through generations in her mother's family. Kim's father's background as an inventor and entrepreneur gave her a desire to take her love of nature and develop a business around it. From 1985 through 1994 Kim and her mother had a business producing educational nature programs for children and adults. They brought plants and animals to life through props and costumes. When her mother retired, Kim continued to do educational programs until 2007.
After getting a degree in business management, Kim became the financial manager for her family's industrial manufacturing business. In addition, she started her own business in 2008, Hollow Tree Concepts, with the emphasis on soap-making. Her product line also includes lotions, body oils, sugar/salt scrubs and lip balms.
Kim will be doing a two-part presentation at our luncheon. During the first half of the program, the audience will take a trip back in time with her character, “Lydia,” to explore the plants of the Bible. The second half of the program is a fast-forward to present day showing how she makes soap (like grandma used to make) using techniques and many of the oils, herbs, resins, and spices from Biblical times. This is a hands-on program in which the audience participates through all of their senses. Everyone will be able to sample a snack of honey and locusts, smell and try Balm of Gilead salve, make “washing balls” and much more. Kim will also have goodie bags with samples of her products for each woman attending the luncheon.
The menu will feature roast pork loin, baby red potatoes, carrots, salad, rolls, coffee, milk, and cherry cobbler for dessert.

Christian Women's Connection Luncheon September 9
Featuring Sara Renner, Speaker and Musician
The Dickinson Area Christian Women's Connection will host their monthly luncheon Wednesday, September 9, at Pine Grove Country Club, 1520 W. Hughitt, from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Our special guest this month is Sara Renner from Minneapolis, MN. Sara is a professional singer, worship leader, recording artist and songwriter who has shared her music in over 1000 churches, festivals and secular venues nationally and internationally. She has independently produced four CDs and a DVD and has sung and arranged background vocals on over 100 other artists' recording projects including Sara Groves, Jason Gray and Bryan Duncan.
Sara was nominated Best Gospel/Spiritual artist by the Minnesota Music Academy in 2006 and in 2007 was selected by fans of the National Hockey League's MN Wild to sing The Star Spangled Banner and O Canada at all home games. In 2008, Sara and her dynamic band “The Elements” entered the Club 3 Degrees Music Tournament and won!
Join us to hear Sara speak and sing about how she has found wholeness and freedom in the midst of and in spite of painful childhood issues such as abandonment, addiction, family turmoil and low self-esteem.
Sara Renner's CDs will be available for purchase at the luncheon.

Featuring Terry Sovey's 20th Century First Ladies Dolls
The Dickinson Area Christian Women's Connection will host their monthly luncheon Wednesday, August 12, at Pine Grove Country Club, 1520 W. Hughitt, from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Our speaker this month is Becky McDonough of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Becky is a busy mom working in the health care industry. In her talk, “Confessions of a Control Freak,” she tells how she thought she had to be perfect to be loved. This led to her wanting to control everything in her life. She ended up doing things that made her life even more out of control. After asking Jesus to take control of her life, she has learned to trust Him with everything including two rounds of cancer.
We are very pleased to have Terry Ann Sovey and a portion of her collection of First Ladies dolls as our special feature this month. Terry is a doll collector and doll maker. She also gives lessons in doll making. Terry is a former teacher, loves history and enjoys showing and speaking about dolls that are part of it. The First Ladies and their stories have always intrigued her. She has collected all of the First Ladies but four.
Terry will be focusing her feature on the 20th Century Christian First Ladies – Devoted Wives and Mothers. These four dolls will be the ones with which most of us are familiar. Terry has taken her information from many sources, but her favorite source is “The Secrets of the First Ladies” which gives insight into their real lives and personalities.
The menu will feature chicken marsala, rice pilaf, candied carrots, coffee, milk, and peach pie for dessert.

Christian Women's Connection Luncheon July 15
Featuring Genie Brown and Becky Cecconi
The Dickinson Area Christian Women's Connection will host their monthly luncheon Wednesday, July 15, at Pine Grove Country Club, 1520 W. Hughitt, from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Our program this month will feature Genie Brown of Boyne City, Michigan. Genie grew up in Indiana before the electronic gadget explosion and enjoyed life in a simpler time. Even still there were challenges to overcome and expectations to meet. After attending DePauw University for two years, Genie married Tom and life began in earnest. Four children came along in steady progression and they faced neurological issues with their eldest child. Tom spent a number of years trying to get settled into a suitable job for him and his family. Each of these situations brought its own set of expectations which in turn brought Genie and Tom to their need for God in their lives in a tangible way.
Genie will share with us her view of “Life's Expectations” -- others' expectations of us, our expectations for ourselves, our spouses, and our children and how, inevitably, we are disappointed and disillusioned by ourselves and others. But there is One who will never disappoint us and enables us to meet all of life's expectations – His name is Jesus. If you are struggling with all that the world and others demand of you, come and hear what life with Christ can mean.
Our special feature is Becky Cecconi and the United in Praise Sacred Dance Team. Becky will be performing a solo routine and then will be joined by Connie Tresedder, Julie Benzie, Abby Tresedder, Abby Kaminski, and Amber Miller for a group performance. Connie Tresedder formed this group in 2004, mentored Becky and now Becky leads it. Participants of the dance team range from grade-school age to women in their 50s. The group has performed in various churches throughout the area. Connie and Becky choreograph the routines together. Becky gives all the credit to God for her choreographic ideas -- “I don't want the audience to see me, but rather the love of the Father.”
Becky is a native of the area and graduated from Kingsford. She and her husband of 24 years, Dr. Daniel Cecconi, have two sons, Noah and Nicholas. Becky has played and excelled in sports her entire life. She was inducted into the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. She is also a well-known golfer in the area and has won many tournaments in the U.P. Connie took ballet for several years, so the transition to the Sacred Dance Team was a natural one. Becky is also an accomplished gardener and a licensed nurse practitioner.
The menu will feature meat loaf, mashed red potatoes, green beans amandine, coffee, milk, and orange sherbet for dessert.

Featuring Karen Ferguson and Crystal Hogan
The Dickinson Area Christian Women's Connection will host their monthly luncheon Wednesday, June 10, at Pine Grove Country Club, 1520 W. Hughitt, from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Our program this month will feature Karen Ferguson of Onalaska, Wisconsin. Karen and her husband moved to the LaCrosse, Wisconsin area in June of 1969. Her husband had just finished his duty with the United States Army and they looked forward to life in “God's Country.” The following year Karen began working in the local school district and spent the next 31 years either in the classroom or guidance. She retired in 2001 and now can do all those things she couldn't do while she was working – spending time with children and grandchildren, tending her garden, and baking.
Karen has been involved in many areas of women's ministries at her church. She serves on the leadership team in the area of support and encouragement. She has also been involved in many women's events throughout the year. She co-facilitates the Divorce Care program and also sings in the church choir.
Like many women, life has not always been so delightful for Karen and she shares the pain and recovery from an abusive relationship in her inspiring talk “From Brokenness to Forgiveness and Freedom.”
Crystal Hogan will be our musical guest. Many of you may know Crystal from her work with the Kingsford High School Chorale and the community choir. Crystal has been a dedicated music teacher for thirty years – 20 years in Florence, Wisconsin and ten years at Kingsford. She participates in the district and state music festivals and is a member of the State Honors Choir Staff. We had the pleasure of “seeing” Crystal in action in December when she brought the Chorale to our luncheon – now we will have the pleasure of “hearing” Crystal as she sings for us.
The menu will feature club sandwich on croissant with fresh fruit, coffee, milk, and strawberry shortcake for dessert.
All are welcome and invited to attend. Cost of the luncheon is $12 inclusive with free nursery available upon reservation.

Men, Women, Couples, and Singles Dinner
“NORTH TO ALASKA” DINNER EVENT FEATURING ROB NORTON
The Iron Mountain Area Christian Women's Connection is sponsoring a special evening event and inviting men, women, couples, and singles. Please join us at the Pine Grove Country Club, 1520 W. Hughitt, on Tuesday, May 12 at 6:00 pm for dinner and an evening filled with fun and inspiration.
The program will feature Rob Norton, a former bush pilot and registered Alaskan fishing guide. Rob will share some of his adventures as a bush pilot and give a broad overview of fly fishing techniques. Rob's position as a contract pilot for Fed Ex brought him and his wife Patsy to Iron Mountain 15 years ago. He has since become the President and Director of Operations for CSA Air, which employs approximately 50 people and is headquartered in Iron Mountain. Prior to that, Norton spent 14 years in Alaska – flying for five years in the most remote parts of Alaska, five years for an Alaskan airline commuter, and four years for Chelatna Lake Lodge.
Rob has had a passion for flying since he was a young boy growing up in Hinsdale, Illinois. His parents fueled this passion by buying him a radio so he could listen to the O'Hare ATC, which he did for hours. He took his first flying lesson at the age of 15. He ultimately joined the Marines, became a pilot and proudly served in Viet Nam.
While living in Alaska during the 1980s and 1990s, Norton tied two world records for fly fishing and broke a world record for catching a Chinook salmon weighing 52 pounds on a fly rod. We're certain you'll want to hear some of his tricks of the trade!
Our speaker for the evening is Erv Smith, of Moline, Illinois. Erv presents his life and biography -- “Used, Abused, & Renewed: A Story of Recovery” -- uniquely by singing country songs and playing “Name that Tune” with the audience. He tells how he was once held captive by alcohol and the night life of a musician, until God worked through people to bring him to the saving grace of Jesus Christ and a new life. His is truly a story of restoration.
Erv is a graduate of Western Illinois University and Moody Graduate School. He worked for many years for Navistar (formerly International Harvester) and took an early retirement in 1993. He and his wife Dorothy worked as volunteers at the Stonecroft Conference Center near Branson, Missouri. From 1998 through 2002 Erv taught GED and Parenting classes to inmates at the Rock Island County Jail. Erv and Dorothy travel for Stonecroft Ministries speaking and singing about what God has done in their lives. Erv specializes in helping churches transition between pastors and is the founder and director of a ministry entitled “Chaplain on Call.” We are very pleased to have Erv here to share his story with us.
Tickets for the evening may be purchased at three locations in Iron Mountain: First National Bank, Storheim's, and The Hopehouse. Tickets are $17 per person, inclusive, and must be purchased in advance by Friday, May 8.
The menu for the evening will include Beef Tenderloin Tips with Burgundy Wine Sauce over Pasta, Fresh Sautéed Vegetables, Salad, Rolls, Coffee, Milk, and Ice Cream for dessert.

The Dickinson Area Christian Women's Connection will host their monthly luncheon Wednesday, April 15, at Pine Grove Country Club, 1520 W. Hughitt, from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Our program this month will feature Laurie Kimball from Minneapolis, MN. Laurie has a Master's Degree in Counseling, is a Registered Nurse and a Distinguished Toastmaster. She has experience as a psychiatric nurse and individual therapist. She worked her way through school as a blueberry picker, pickle packer, pizza waitress, and factory assembly line worker. She enjoys reading and walking. Married to her college sweetheart since 1976, Laurie and Greg have three great children: Cory, Jessica, and Melissa.
Laurie's presentation is comprised of two segments. The first segment is an interactive session to determine your learning style and how it affects memory and communication and how you can improve. It is entitled “See, Say or Do: Which One Are You?” The second segment is entitled “Moving On.” We are always moving on in life, even without changing locations. You will learn some tips about moving on physically, emotionally, and spiritually in this motivating talk.
Laurie is also the author of “The Depression Toolkit: Practical Ways to Get Through the Day.” This book will be available for purchase after the luncheon.
The menu will feature beef stroganoff over noodles, broccoli, salad, bread, coffee, milk, and lemon cake for dessert.

March 11 Meeting Information
Our March 11, 2009 meeting will be held from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. at Pine Grove Country Club.
Curt and Cheryle Spicer will be our musical guests.
Christine Bassett from Washington, Michigan will be our guest speaker. She is a three-time cancer survivor. She has three sons: one in Iraq, one who is a pilot, and one who is a youth pastor.
The menu will include: Poor Man's Lobster w/ Butter, Baked Potato, Asparagus, salad and rolls,
Pistachio Torte, Coffee & Milk.
We look forward to seeing many of you there.

All the seasons in one month!
Well, I think December has given us a taste of almost all the seasons! We haven't had any summer weather, but we've had tons of snow, spring thawing, and deep freezing. I, for one, have had enough!
I hope everyone had a fun, happy and safe Christmas. We look forward to seeing everyone in the new year. Our next luncheon is on January 14. We will have Debbie Gerard as our special speaker. Her theme is "My Journey from Fear to Joy". Jodi Farrington will be sharing music and we will hear from Hopehouse Christian Bookstore and Amber Rayz Massage.
Our menu will be Salad, Roast Pork Loin, Roasted Red Potatoes, Candied Carrots, and Dessert.

Did I really see snow?
Hi everyone! Can you believe we're in the middle of November already? How'd that happen? Well, tomorrow we've got a great luncheon planned. Don't forget that the country club is closed, so we'll be at Country Kitchen instead. I can't wait to write about how everything goes!

Make A Joyful Noise!

Have you ever wanted to know more about Stonecroft Ministries? Christian Women's Connection is an outreach program provided by Stonecroft. Join our team in this special "Call to Prayer" with Mary Hamrick. We'll be meeting on October 23, from 9:30am to 11:30am at Koinonia Cafe in Kingsford. Coffee will be provided and you are welcome to order off the menu at your own expense.
